Robotics Excellence Sector

Each year, the Bordeaux Convention Bureau highlights the sectors of excellence in the region through video reports. With the aim of supporting the candidacy of major congresses, the Bordeaux Convention Bureau wishes to become more involved by supporting the sectors of excellence of the region. This second video report focuses on the robotics sector of excellence.

The Aquitaine Robotics cluster, which was created in 2013, currently brings together more than 100 members, including companies, research and training organizations, and users. It gathers together stakeholders in manufacturing and logistics robotics from Nouvelle Aquitaine and aims to develop skills in scientific research and training, to structure the regional robotics sector, or even to support collaborative research and development projects.

It is thanks to the dynamism of the sector that Bordeaux will host the RoboCup in 2023, the world championship in robotics and artificial intelligence. Rhoban, the LaBRI (Computer Science Research Laboratory at University of Bordeaux) team will put its quadruple world champion medal at stake.

The project brings together actors from research, education and industry with the aim of stimulating innovation in this discipline and the concrete applications related to it. It is estimated that 40,000 visitors will be welcomed to attend this championship over the 4 days. Will be confronted : 3,500 participants from 45 different countries, equipped with their 3,000 robots (forecast values).

“When the idea of bringing RoboCup to Bordeaux was initiated at the end of 2015, we knew that the Bordeaux Convention Bureau had been active in organizing the ITS (Intelligent Transport System) Congress that same year. I immediately got in touch with them to jointly build an application project. Very quickly, we introduced them to the President of the RoboCup Federation in Leipzig. That was the trigger that made it clear that what was a bit of a crazy dream was actually quite doable."

Jean-François Laplume, General Secretary of Unitec and RoboCup France Delegate
