The art of sustainable viticulture by Château de Ferrand

Because respect for soils and environment is a priority at Château de Ferrand, we invite you to discover this unique ecosystem during a workshop dedicated to the vineyard.

Situated on the clay-limestone plateau of Saint-Emilion, at an altitude of 103 meters and above the Dordogne valley, Château de Ferrand is one of the highest vineyards in the appellation: 32 hectares in a single block, it belongs to a preserved site and a unique ecosystem.

Respect for the soil and the environment is a priority for this 42-hectare estate. In the process of converting to organic farming over the past 3 years, with the first certified vintage expected in 2024, the estate has been asserting its determination to practice living agriculture, which has led to numerous investments in both the vineyard and the development of its teams. In the same spirit, Ferrand has been certified Terra Vitis since 2012, HVE 3 since 2018 and ISO 14001 since 2021.

This initiative gave rise to the "L'art de la vigne durable" workshop. Its objectives? To make as many people as possible aware of the many climatic changes taking place, and of the various reworking operations carried out on the estate's land.

In this workshop, we cover the entire vine cycle, from pruning to harvest, exploring in detail the work carried out in the vineyard by our teams throughout the year. Discovering the influence of climate on our terroir, we present the types of soil that lie beneath your feet and the different varieties of grape that exist. We explain why these grape varieties were planted on each parcel of the estate, and talk about the restructuring of the vineyard.

The tour continues with a focus on vinification, inherent to the work we do outdoors, and emphasizing the importance of vineyard work above all else. We then explain the type of ageing, how we work to get the best out of each expression of terroir, and why we use not only barrels, but also amphorae and Wineglobe.

To conclude this unique tour, we offer a tasting of three of our best vintages, commented by a sommelier and highlighting the different sensations and aromas on the palate that express the grape varieties and soil types discussed during the tour.
