Neurosciences excellence sector

With the intention to shade a light on our territory excellence sectors throughout reports, the Bordeaux Convention Bureau met the people involved in those projects: searchers and clinical practitioners of Bordeaux Neurocampus, doctors of hospitals, founders of start-ups and companies based on the territory, students, and doctoral students.

The neuroscience sector in Bordeaux widely evolved during the last 15 years to become one of the biggest communities of France and Europe in the sector, with more than 700 scientists working on the campus of the Université de Bordeaux.

In 1994, the first French Federative Institute of Research in the brain sector was created in Bordeaux. This group evolved and was renamed Bordeaux Neurocampus, which is today a department of the University of Bordeaux. It gathers 6 laboratories, which represents 55 research teams and 20 platforms, to take research at the leading-edge of innovation on brain and pathologies.

The report approaches many subjects especially and focuses on formation : Bordeaux has 140 students in master’s degree and 140 doctoral students in Neurosciences research.

Bordeaux also holds the Neuroscience Institute, a laboratory entirely adapted for neurosciences research and exclusively dedicated to the principle of learning by doing for researchers.

The laboratory of 500 square meters can hold 20 students coming from all over the world and gathers the leading-edge technologies in terms of medical imagery. The report also focuses on research, clinical aspect, and direction on the industrial sector with startups such as Lucine and Rebrain.

Finally, a specialized unity in sleep, addictions and neuropsychiatry issues was created in 2011. Located in Bordeaux Hospital, it is formed by 27 people. The unity holds a platform equipped with a sleep recording room and virtual reality equipment (flighting and driving simulator, Controlled Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE) financed by the project EquipEx “PHENOVIRT”, etc.).

This equipment at the leading-edge of innovation permits to searchers to determine the links between sleep issues and psychiatric pathologies and to test innovative behaviorist protocols.
