Our actions

For many years, Bordeaux Metropole has been committed to responsible tourism.

This commitment is part of its constant concern for its quality of welcome of its leisure and business tourists and for raising their awareness about the sustainable development of the territory. The numerous titles held by the Tourist and Convention Office - Qualité Tourisme, Tourisme et Handicap, Destination pour Tous, Accueil Vélo - confirm the destination’s dynamism. As well as the organization and the hosting of major events related to sustainable development, such as Climax, World Impact Submit, ITS for Climate, Woodrise and the Africa-France 2020 Summit.

Bordeaux wants to go beyond the commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050, becoming one of the first positive energy metropole by the same date. It is one of the three strategic orientations of its Plan d’action pour un territoire durable à haute qualité de vie (Action Plan for a Sustainable Territory with a High Quality of Life), with the protection of the 50% of natural areas that the territory includes and the strengthening of a sustainable solidarity and shared well-being. For tourism, this implies in particular the support of soft mobility, through the public transport network which irrigates all the centres of interest (93% of the high capacity hotels are within 30mins of a congress centre by public transport), and the use of the bicycle, particularly suitable for discovering the metropole (1,125km/700 miles of bike path and 2,000 self-service bicycles).

Bordeaux wants to lead these eco-responsible transitions, inspiring all the other local players – already active in this field. All of the Bordeaux Congress and Exhibition facilities (CEB) have ISO 14001 sustainable certification. They offer carbon footprint audits and the Exhibition Centre has a car park with photovoltaic panels on 20ha. It is the largest solar power plant in an urban area in France. Many actors of the MICE industry are also eco-labelled, hotels, restaurants and caterers, stand designers and event agencies. 60% of the vineyards, which counts with many venues, was already certified in an environmental approach in 2017.

To strengthen these commitments, the Bordeaux Convention Bureau participates this year in the Global Destination Sustainability Index. The GDS-Index is the main benchmarking program, which brings together 50 cities around the world, supporting them in their eco-responsible strategies in events.

Bordeaux confirms its prime position as a regenerative destination for visits and meetings. More and more visitors are committed to the same values and it is our duty to support them in this responsible tourism consumption.
