Organic methods are at the heart of Château Smith Haut Lafitte

We do not use chemicals, preferring natural methods of combating vine pests, like plant infusions and decoctions.

The list of green initiatives is long: we have been making our own compost since 1997 and have promoted biodiversity in the vineyards by planting kilometres of hedges and, more recently, installing hives, so that the bees can collect honey from the flowers of our cover crop. We reintroduced horses into the vineyards over 20 years ago, to plough areas with fragile soils, we produce our scions from our own massal selections and even our own rootstocks on an island in the middle of the Garonne River, in a totally protected environment, to maintain the genetic richness and diversity of our vines.

In 2013 we inaugurated a unique winery: the first energy-neutral winemaking facility in the world, known as a "stealth" winery. In particular, it is equipped with a unique system for recycling the CO2 produced during fermentation of the wines into sodium bicarbonate (the Château was invited to describe the process at the COP21 conference on climate change!).

Located on the outskirts of the city of Bordeaux in a beautiful natural setting surrounded by woods and vines as far as the eye can see, we’re glad to welcome you in a spirit of sharing.

The château team offers wine workshops revolving around various themes, as well as function rooms with a wonderful atmosphere for prestigious events.
